Same Love

I sat and thought for a long time to write something funny. But there is nothing funny about Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code. This section dates back to 1860 and was introduced during British Rule of India ( Note: Even Britain abolished it in recent past).

Section 377, IPC reads as:
“377. Unnatural offences.—Whoever voluntarily has carnal intercourse against the order of nature with any man, woman or animal, shall be punished with imprisonment for life, or with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to ten years, and shall also be liable to fine."
I think the first reaction which comes from the majority is ' Why should I care? '

Of course you can choose to ignore the entire context from your life and most probably it would change nothing in your life. But you could say the same thing about walking past a stranger who is lying down injured from an accident. No one is going to sue you for not helping. All that would effect is that tiny little thing called consciousness. Why is that? Because we don't call ourselves animals. We like to be called  'HumanKind'. That should mean something. I am sure most of us care about the society we live in. It should matter to us if we were to find something unfair. I don't suggest that there should be any kind of  special consideration or reservation ( somehow that seemed OK for casteism). No,I don't support any such privileges. But least we can do is let them be. Isn't criminalization little too barbaric for a country which boosts of democracy and secularism?

Now, to the section of people who say ' It serves them good. Such indecency should not be entertained! ' I am just lost.

For a long time I was angry at such people. But after considerable amount of thought I am absolutely lost. Because I just don't seem to understand their thought process. I tried talking to people and find out their side of argument but I couldn't get a good enough valid reason. Most of the times they go into an offensive verbal spree as if I had questioned their orientation! or sometimes they make some lame excuse about against religion. I mean are you telling me that each one of us are living as per the textbook ( in this case holy scripture ). Really? Because I can guarantee we are not.

And the most confusing term is " against the order of nature".Now this gets me everytime. Do you think that these people forcefully are putting themselves in this position, against all odds to feel different? You really think that they would spend an entire life hiding it from their loved ones, living in lie and suffer in all the guilt and loneliness on purpose?

It is with adherence to nature that some are born different. Nature treats everyone same. Last time I checked sun didn't refuse to shine on gay folks!

The only valid reason I can comprehend is fear. We fear what is unknown. We fear what is different. If you fear that it is contagious or something then you are most certainly wrong. Biggest boon and curse of your sexuality is that no one can change it. If it is ignorance which is source of such hatred then I suggest researching on it and enlighten yourself. And if it is pure loathing to everything which is different and which you can't fully understand and agree upon, well then, there is no hope.

The other day I read an article about Hinduism, it said ' The Vedas recognize the marriage between a man and a woman only. Such a marriage may happen either with or without consent.' I am not even sure if our Vedas say that. But if they do, then I am extremely sad to hear it. Because I believe marriage is when two people share love, respect and deeply care for each other. Maybe they will experience these emotions after their journey has started and take their own sweet time. But it is
not just a relationship between a man and a woman.

It is not a crime for two people to love each other and wanting to spend their lives together. I don't think it is a crime for two adults to engage in consensual acts if they want to. But I do think it is a crime if  people are forced to hide their true identity and in doing so forced into marriage or such commitments where both the parties suffer. I think forced sex is a crime. And it doesn't matter what how old you are, what skin color you have or what gender you belong to.

We have enough number of bad guys in this world...rapists, murderers, terrorists, kidnappers, robbers, frauds ..list can go on. But prejudicing because they are different from you? Nah...We are better than that. It is easy to hate. But world could do with little love right now. If that's too much to ask, then least it could do with is tolerance.
